There was a lot of talk about Lalaloopsy in our house after the kids saw the commercial. Every time it was on, all I heard was “Mooooom! Can I have a Lalaloopsy? Pleaaaaaase?”
While responded with my usual “No,” I started researching the dolls to see if they would be worth it, and I eventually did buy one to see how they would fly. I do have to admit that I was totally attracted to the Katy Perry hair they all had going on.
Description of Lalaloopsy Pillow Featherbed:
Getting the Lalaloopsy Pillow Featherbed doll out of her packaging was quite the adventure in itself. It’s all plastic and fitted together with tape that needs to be stripped off and tabs all the way down the back that all need to be popped out before the doll can be rescued from her box.
While it’s often promoted as a rag doll, she is made out of plastic. She is designed to be floppy like a rag doll, and surprisingly enough, it works out quite well. All her joints are loose enough to sort of give you a rag doll feel, but she still manages to feel very durable. However, the clothes do leave a little to be desired – I had to sew on the buttons to make sure they would stay on.
She comes with a cute little plastic sheep, who is her pet and best buddy, and included in her pajama outfit is a matching sleep mask. If you can’t tell by now, this doll’s all about bed time.
Pillow came with a ‘sewn on’ date of January 3rd, which is printed above her butt. This is the day that, according to the story, she came to life after being sewn together out of a baby’s blanket. Her personality is Sleepy, and she loves bed time stories, milk and cookies. I’m starting to think that this doll is more compatible with me!
What the Kids Said:
I can’t tell you how much everyone loves this doll. All three of my girls loved it right out of the box.
We took it to our weekly play date, and all of the girls that were four or older did indeed like her, even the 13 year old that happened to be with us that day. I think it really boils down to how ‘girlie’ these dolls are. My 4 year old daughter couldn’t wait to tell everyone about Pillow’s imaginary background. She repeated the bit about milk and cookies close to twenty times.
The toddlers did seem to be attracted to her, they enjoyed her floppiness, but there was more slobbering and chewing going on than anything. Probably not a good choice for them, as I can see teeth damaging the hands and feet. That and her heavy head makes her difficult for them to handle.
They are all in all, attractive dolls for all girls. Even my kid sister – well, she’s 22 – actually went out and got two others from the collection for herself!
Why I Like It:
- Very hip looking dolls with crazy colored hair.
- Hair is molded, so it doesn’t tangle or frizz if the doll takes a bath.
- Clothes easily come on and off, making dress up easier for the smaller kids.
- She’s very easy to clean. All you need is a damp cloth to clean her up.
- Really girl oriented, and girls really play with them.
What to Watch Out For:
- Packaging is difficult to open. Younger children will definitely need help getting it out.
- Some of the dolls heads don’t flop like the others. This seems to be limited to some (but not all) from the Mittens Fluff ‘n Stuff model. While I would consider this a manufacturer’s default, most agree that it really doesn’t take away from the doll. I have not found similar complaints of the other models.
- She doesn’t sit or stand on her own. Also not a cuddly doll, so don’t expect it to be.
- The clothes may need a bit of additional attention, such as some extra sewing of buttons, before they’re really ready for dress up play.
Is The Laloopsy Pillow Featherbed Doll a Good Value?
My first answer is yes. She gets a lot of play time around here. But I need to warn you – while doing my research, I found a lot of places trying to sell her for $50. Don’t pay that price – you don’t need to. She retails for around $25, which is close to the price I bought her for, and that I consider a good price.
Because this line is still young but seeing a huge rise in popularity, there are only a few Lalaloopsy outfits available but I expect that more will be coming out. Most outfits are available for $8 – $15.
What Others are Saying:
Most reviews about this line from both parents and children is that they are fantastic dolls. They seem to really be catching on as a great doll for pretend and play.
There are a few negative reviews out there, but none seem to be harsh. Most complaints from people who buy a Lalaloopsy doll are that the doll wasn’t what they were expecting. I have tried to be as descriptive as possible in this review, so if you read it and purchase the doll, you will know what you’re getting.
